Laundry.  We run a load every day.

We know it needs to be done, and we are always on the search for a cheaper and easier way to accomplish this never ending task.

We had established a very inexpensive system for laundry when we had no washer or dryer in our apartment.  Our cheap and manageable method was to take the laundry to the Laundromat about 2 times a week.  Using the commercial size loaders (up to 35 lbs) allowed a lot of laundry to be done in a short period of time, with very little use of detergent.  The cost was $3.25 for the entire load of wash.

But it was a bit of a pain to lug big bags of laundry, and boxes of detergent and dryer sheets, all over the place.

Our new home has our very own laundry machines right in the basement.  Yay!  Now we are trying to work down the cost laundry soap.  Those bottles of liquid detergent never last as long as the labels promise.

So we are experimenting with detergent pods.  The little, premeasured, and dissolving packs that you toss in the machine with your laundry.  No measuring, no muss.  We’re hoping they’ll save money by controlling the amount of detergent that we use per load.  The no dyes, no perfumes version we bought costs about 20 cents a load.

That’s our current plan for solving the cost of laundry issue.  We may experiment with homemade detergent next!
