  1. Stretch It Out!

    July 11, 2013 by admin

IMG_0333This TR family likes to travel.  Our weekends are filled with jaunts that typically take us at least an hour from home.  And about once a month, we can be as far as two or more hours afield.

As typical of most children, Bluey and Plum get quite squirrely if they have to sit in the car for a long stretch.  We have various tried and true solutions to keep our kiddos happy during a road trip.  But at some point in the journey, everyone needs a break.

We have found that nothing turns around deteriorating moods quicker than some physical exercise.  A simple walk down the main street of a town off a random highway exit, an interstate rest area that has a small playground or expansive open fields, or a planned mini-excursion to see a road-side attraction can be just the thing to bring back the smiles.

Surviving an endless journey shouldn’t be the only lasting memory of any adventure.  Make the time to take a break.  It’ll be worth it!

ThriftyRambler’s Guide to Quick Evening Meals, Part 1

Do you ever have busy days when you come home from work or errands to find everyone hungry and looking to you?  Well, we present, “ThriftyRambler’s Guide to Meals in a Hurry!”  All of the following suggestions will have you and your family eating dinner within twenty minutes of walking in the door.  And it will be a fabulous, healthy, home-cooked meal in that short amount of time.

Meals that go from Zero-to-Done in twenty minutes:

*Quesadillas:  We use pre-packaged whole wheat tortillas and bake them in the oven with cheese, to use less oil.  You can easily add olives, spinach, etc. to the quesadilla prior to baking.  Serve with tortilla chips, salsa and sour cream.  Boil off some frozen corn while you set the table, and you’ve got a satisfying meal.

*Simple-Homemade Mac and Cheese:  It takes less time than you would think.  Put your pasta water on to boil.  While the water is getting hot, you have about ten minutes to change, get the mail, and set the table.  When the water comes to a boil, and you pour in your pasta noodles, get out some butter, cream cheese, and cheddar.  Put a smaller pot of water on to cook a side vegetable, or break out the salad mix if you prefer.  Grate the cheddar and set aside.  Drain the pasta, pour it back into the still-hot pasta pot.  Add a few tablespoons of butter, a few tablespoons of cream cheese, about a half cup of cheddar, and mix well.  Sprinkle in a bit of salt and pepper, if you like.  If it gets too thick, add a few tablespoons of milk.  You now have a creamy and delicious homemade mac&cheese, in less than 20 minutes.

*Quinoa Salad :  In just a couple of minutes you can create this wonderful, feta-riffic salad for your family.  Pair with some chips or crackers, and a garden salad, and you have a satisfying meal in twenty minutes!

Meals that You prep in advance, and finish in less than Twenty Minutes:

*Pasta Marinara: Make the sauce at a convenient time, a few days earlier.  Bake bread the night before for maximum freshness.  Set your pasta pot on the stove full with water,IMG_0593 before you leave for work in the morning.  When you get home, flick on the water.  While that comes to a boil, you can settle into home…  Add a salad, or a side-vegetable that cooks while the pasta is boiling, and you have a hearty meal.

*Mini Pizzas:  Use your homemade Marinara to spread on top of English muffins or Daddy bread.   Then add some mozzarella and sliced veggies.  Throw in the oven for about 6 minutes and serve up a platter of fresh and quick, pizzas!

*Sweet Potato Enchiladas: Assemble and cook your enchiladas the night before- leaving off the cheese on top.  When you get home, sprinkle with shredded cheddar and reheat!  Add some tortilla chips and salsa, and your meal is complete!

*Dips and Chips:  Make some dips a few days in advance—bean dip, hummus, artichoke dip- whatever your family likes.  Make some Daddy Bread the night before.  When you get home, put the bean dip and artichoke in the oven to warm up.  Break out some salsa, and toast up some Daddy Bread and you have a fun, simple meal!

With minimal advanced planning, you can create fun, homemade meals on the fly!

  3. I Want To Ride My Bicycle!

    July 7, 2013 by admin

Our Bluey loves to get out on the road.  For over two years he’s been piling mileage onto his Radio Flyer Tricycle.  He has run it into the ground, and was more than ready for a IMG_0088new two-wheeled bike.  Although we could have made that purchase last Fall, we decided to wait until this Spring.  What fun is a brand new bike when there are eighteen inches of snow in the driveway?

This gave us time over the winter to shop.  It’s no small project to get a new bicycle at our house.  TRMom and TRDad started in with research.  We checked various blogs and product reviews for info about which bikes seemed like good choices.

Armed with some knowledge of what to look for in a child’s bike, we headed out to our local stores.  This gave TRDad and Bluey some super-fun destinations to visit in the deepest winter, and it helped build anticipation for the new bike.

In our area, we have many bike stores, each one of which seems to focus on one or two specific brands.  So if you want a Trek, you head to store A, but to see something from Specialized, head to Store B.  Checking out bikes involved a lot of leg-work.  If you are local, we IMG_1775highly recommend the folks at Williamson Bikes & Fitness on East Washington.

After going back and forth between a few first choices, Amber at Willy Street Bikes helped our Bluey finally settle on a nifty green Schwinn Gremlin.  The kicker for Bluey—this one came with a water bottle!  And of course, we had to add a basket for treasures found and stuffies lucky enough to be invited along for the ride.

While Bluey continues to log on the miles, we are happy to report that his choice has worked well for him so far.  He can zip along quite nicely!  And he is pleased with how much further his range is on two wheels, compared to three.

This summer, you’ll see us all around town and on the bike paths.  If you hear a ringing bell, and a child’s on your left, you just might be getting passed by Bluey!

  4. Twisted

    July 5, 2013 by admin

IMG_0089This TR family likes to mix it up.  We’re always interested in an adventure, or for trying out an unique spin on the ordinary.  And if it gets our family outdoors, all the better!

Recently, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and set up breakfast on our 3 season porch.  We can dine while chatting with the bunnies, watching the antics of the squirrels, and enjoying our cats warbled conversation with the backyard birds.  We don’t do anything fancy.  We just moved the typical location of an everyday meal to create a brand new experience.

We also decided to take some of our indoor play to the backyard.  Why not set up a wooden train track in the grass?  Sure, the uneven landscape can make for some bumps.  But we just worked that into our creative play!  There are a plethora of toys that can transition easily from inside to out- from Barbie dolls to building blocks.

You don’t need a ton of space, or a big yard, to incorporate these ideas.  Move 2 chairs to a screened window and eat a sandwich with your child, while guessing which color car will pass by next.  Or a concrete stoop can be a great place to set up some Matchbox track or to build a cardboard doll house.

The only thing keeping you stuck in a play-time rut, or hiding inside, is YOU.

  5. 54th Street Grill Saves The Day

    July 3, 2013 by admin

imagesAfter a long day of vacation excitement, we were at a standstill about dinner.  Bluey, who had a rough patch in the middle of the day and was exhausted, wanted spaghetti marinara and French fries.  Plum wanted a sandwich.   TR Mom and Dad wanted a peaceful and relaxing end to the day.

We did a quick internet search at a few of our usual road trip chains, but couldn’t find one with the right combination of demanded menu items.  We were pondering this dilemma in a parking lot at the mall, when we spotted an unfamiliar restaurant: The 54th Street Grill.  TR Dad ran inside to investigate.

He spoke with the manager/host and laid out the situation:  Did they have vegetarian marinara?  Did they have fries?  The manager showed TR Dad the kid’s menu, where a child can pick an entrée and then select separately from the abundant sides list.  Each meal includes a drink and dessert in the fixed price.  Perfect!

54th Street Grill is a chain with restaurants in southern Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Texas.  The style is casual dining and the menu includes far more veggie friendly options than we’ve seen at other similar chains.  But as is true always, it is the staff that seals the deal on a good restaurant experience.  And the workers at 54th Street Grill were excellent.stlouis_venue_381363

When the whole fam came in,  we were immediately shown to our table, the host started talking to Bluey about StarWars and challenging him to find all the hidden StarWars items among the posters and souvenirs hanging on the wall.  He revealed that he had a custom “Star Warz” license plate.  These simple gestures set the tone for our tired Bluey.  He was delighted to make a new friend, and immediately set out to find all the hidden memorabilia.

Our service was quick and friendly and our food was delicious.   Everyone in the family found something good to eat—TR Mom and Dad scarfed on veggie burgers, an unexpected treat!

Sometimes fate drops you in front of the very best place.  We couldn’t have hoped for a better dinner than the one got at 54th Street Grill that night.

  6. “And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street”

Title of post thanks to Dr. Seuss!

In this busy world, rife with convenience products, we wonder how many people know that you can forage for edible delights even in the most urban settings.IMG_0068

Obviously, you don’t want to disturb any food located on private property.  But if you know where to look, public land has a lot to offer.

For example, less than ½ mile from our home, there is a heavy-loaded Mulberry Tree.   We can think of no better way to complement a bike ride or walk around our neighborhood, then pausing by this generous tree for a mid-jaunt snack.

It has become a summer highlight since we moved to our current neighborhood.  Recently, we found a blackberry bush in the same parcel of public space!

Identifying sources of food growing in your environment is yet another way to deepen your connection to your neighborhood and the world at large.  It is also a basic survival skill.  But be certain to drive home the point to your children that NO found food should ever be eaten unless a knowledgeable adult has identified it as safe for consumption.

We’d love to hear about what you can forage near your home!
