  1. The Birthday Excursion

As our kids grow, we quickly came to the conclusion that planning a big birthday party is a big pain.  The older the kids get, the higher the expectations for a huge event.  And the bigger the event, the larger the expense- and the headache.

So we took a step back and asked ourselves: why do our kids want a party anyway?  Well, they want their birthday to be special.  They want it to be memorable. And they want to IMG_1072share their joy.  It was identifying these points that allowed us to switch gears.

We can make a very special birthday without the big hassle and associated cost.

Instead of planning a large house party, we now plan more intimate affairs: the birthday kid, siblings, and a few choice friends.  Then instead of a home party, we take this smaller group on an adventure that we hope they won’t soon forget.

One year, we took Plum and her two besties to Build-A-Bear.  Each girl got an inexpensive (thanks to coupons and the points program) but awesome, bear to take home.   And another birthday, Plum and a dear friend got to experience the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM). Each girl came home with matching six foot long stuffed snakes and awesome memories of a fun filled day.

This year, Bluey will take his two besties to MPM to explore, get a treat from the gift shop, and to have a yummy lunch out.

Whether it is to a museum, a special park, a trip down the shore, or a skiing day-trip, you can pack a lot of fun into a lovely birthday excursion when you are adding just one or two good friends to the mix. And the memories of the adventure will hopefully last a lifetime.

  2. Trader Joe’s

We don’t always head out on a jaunt with a picnic packed.  And we may not have the desire, or the funds, to eat at a sit down restaurant.  When out and about on an explore that will require a meal on the road, we highly recommend that you consider Trader Joe’s (TJ’s).  They have numerous locations across the States.

Tip:  All stores have a clean customer bathroom which is a huge bonus to factor into any family stop.  And in the back of most TJ’s, you’ll find a free sample station, which is always a welcome sight for hungry travelers.

TJ’s has a well-stocked, prepared cold food section that offers up items ranging from 6-piece sushi to giant falafel sandwiches all priced right around $3.99.  Recently, our family stopped in to satisfy our lunch needs and we managed to feed our brood of 4 for $10.79.  This price included a half gallon of high fructose corn syrup free chocolate milk!  It’s a quick in and out to grab food to eat in the car, or to pick up supplies for an impromptu picnic.  The wide range of ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads, fresh fruit, and snacks means there’s always something for everyone in the family at a far cheaper price than any restaurant.  It’s far healthier, too!

We are curious if our experiences at TJ’s could be duplicated within a large supermarket.  Our local Hyvee has quite a selection of hot and cold prepared meals.  But we’ve yet to test the supermarket waters for lunches while on the road.  The vegetarian options and the low price point that can be found in a TJ’s is going to be pretty hard to beat!

What are your out and about meal tips?
