This TR household believes that authority should always be questioned.  We raise our children to critically examine what is presented as factual.  And we welcome civil debate on any subject.

We have found it disturbing to witness the recent backlash against Jenny McCarthy and parents who choose to not vaccinate their children.  A recent article in The Nation about Jenny McCarthy joining the tv show, The View, stated that the “mere act of hiring her would seem to credit her as a reliable source.”  Now come on!  Who on earth turns to The View to guide them through life decisions? The stars of The View are hired for their “personality”, not their credibility.

And doctors are “firing” parents if they choose not to vaccinate.  How is that an acceptable response?  How does that promote discourse?

We vaccinate our children.  But we follow an alternative schedule.  And we opt out of some vaccinations, like chicken pox.  You may not agree with our choice.  But don’t presume that we haven’t researched it or that we haven’t discussed this decision at length with our pediatrician.

Why are people that make a different choice being bastardized?  It can’t just be the argument that those that choose to not vaccinate are putting the entire world at risk.  We have threats to our global existence far more severe than chicken pox.  So what gives?  Why is this medical decision the one that we are not allowed to question?
